Why should my wheels be aligned?
It's pretty basic really - if one of your wheels is facing left while the other three are facing straight ahead this is going to create ‘pull' from that wheel. This can result in uneven tyre wear, and can affect your suspension, steering and the safety of your vehicle. Not the best thing when you're cruising in your car down a country highway or zipping round city corners, but especially dangerous in emergency situations like sudden breaking or hard steering to avoid an accident or obstruction in the road.
Why don't my tyres stay aligned?
Many things affect you cars wheel alignment. General wear and tear, hitting the kerb, rough driving, bumpy roads, potholes, and speed bumps are just some of the things that can affect your car's wheel alignment.
How do I know when I need a wheel alignment?
If your tyres become very out of balance you can notice signs like your car pulling to one side, or side to side, your steering wheel seeming ‘off-centre' or your tyres wearing unevenly. Most times the decline of your wheel alignment is gradual and so you don't notice the change in your cars feel, but you will certainly notice the sudden improvement once your tyres are properly aligned.
What's the difference between a wheel alignment and a wheel balance?
Both are important. A wheel balance is usually performed by a tyre fitter and involves placing metal weights on the rim to ensure the wheel spins on the axle in a perfectly balanced way. A shudder or shake at a specific speed is one symptom of unbalanced wheels.
